Florida State University
Environmental Health & Safety
Do You Know....?
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this training, you will be able to:
Attention Deans, Department Heads, Supervisors & Resident Assistants
Complete your Departmental Emergency Evacuation Plan. Keep it updated on file.
Educate employees and residents about your department’s fire exits and meeting point.
Set up a meeting point at least 50’ from building. Remember: Allow for social distancing when selecting a site.
Be Prepared!
Avoid panic during an emergency.
Know what to do before it happens.
Individuals with Disabilities
In a fire emergency, individuals with disabilities evacuate via exits directly to exterior. If your floor does not exit directly to outside, go to nearest stairwell.
Do not attempt to move an individual downstairs. If unable to exit on their own, help relocate them to nearest stairwell and get help.
Persons should only be moved or relocated with their permission.
Fire Drills.......Yay!!
They prepare us to get out safely
Learn:
Fire and Emergency Evacuation Drills are mandated by Florida law and require building occupants to evacuate when alarm sounds.
It is unlawful to tamper with or destroy fire alarm equipment.
In the Event of a Fire
Do not re-enter building until all-clear has been given by authorized persons (police or fire personnel).
In the Event of a Fire
In the Event of a Fire
5. If Caught in Smoke, Stay Low and Go!
Cover your mouth and nose with a damp cloth to minimize smoke inhalation.
Smoke rises, so stay close to the floor where air is less toxic.
Extinguisher Labels
Extinguisher Labels
Extinguishers are classed by the types of materials they extinguish.
The most common fire extinguisher type is an ABC extinguisher. You will find these in common areas such as hallways and office suites.
How to Use an Extinguisher
P.A.S.S. Method
Pull pin from extinguisher handle
Aim nozzle at base of fire
Squeeze handle with palm of hand to discharge unit at fire
Sweep nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire and walk towards the fire as you spray until fire is completely out
Stand about 8 to 10 feet away from fire while using extinguisher
Extinguisher Do's and Don'ts
Use extinguisher if:
Safe to do so
You have an unobstructed exit route before attempting to use it
It is the right size and type of extinguisher for the fire at hand
Do not use extinguisher if:
Gauge is in red recharge zone
Pin shows signs of tampering
Extinguisher is damaged
What Have You Learned?
State the five steps to take during a fire shared in this presentation.

What Have You Learned?
One of the best steps to slow a fire down is to close doors.
What Have You Learned?
Match the extinguisher type to the fire type.

How far away from a fire should you stand when using a fire extinguisher?
Everyone's Responsibility
Always report fires on campus even if you believe it is completely extinguished.
Everyone's Responsibility
Fire doors should never be propped open. They help contain fires and save lives.
Items should not be hung on door closure.
Fire extinguishers and exit pathways should be kept clear in case of emergency.
Increased storage and clutter can create tripping hazards and add to the fuel in the event of a fire.
Everyone's Responsibility
Damaged or frayed cords can cause fires and electrical hazards.
Do not use extension cords as permanent wiring.
Do not daisy chain extension cords and or power strips together.
Connecting multiple electrical cords and power strips can cause wires to overheat and potentially start a fire.
Everyone's Responsibility
Materials that can burn should not be placed on top of or close to sources of heat like portable heaters or halogen lights.
FSU prohibits use of open flames on campus. These items include but are not limited to candles, grills, tiki torches and fire works.
Smoking is prohibited in all buildings and on campus.
Kitchen Fire Suppression Systems
Designed to put out grease fires and stop a fire from spreading
If you work where one is installed, request training on use from your supervisor.
Overhead Sprinkler Systems
Items must be stored at least 18 inches from sprinkler head in order to avoid blocking sprinkler coverage.
Activates when a sprinkler head reaches a specific temperature.
Only individual heads activate at point of heat or flame exposure. Entire system will not go off.
Items should never be hung from sprinkler heads or piping (no clothes hangers, electrical cords… or Christmas lights).
What Have You Learned?
What is the minimum distance that stored items should be located from a fire sprinkler head?
